🌍 Origin
Tteokbokki — spicy-sweet rice cake stir-fry — is Korea's most beloved street food. The original court version used a soy sauce base (ganjang tteokbokki) but the mass-market gochujang (red pepper paste) version became dominant after the 1950s Korean War era, when it spread from Seoul's pojangmacha tent stalls to every street corner. It has since crossed into Istanbul's Korean restaurants as a popular starter or snack.

Eat tteokbokki piping hot from the pan. The rice cakes should be chewy and coated in the spicy-sweet sauce — not overly soft or dry. Pierce with a skewer or chopsticks. Drink plenty of cold water or barley tea alongside — the heat builds. At Istanbul's Korean restaurants, a mild (덜 맵게 / deol maepge) version may be available on request.
